The King James Version: A Brief History

As I’ve noted before, this year makes the 400th anniversary of the King James Version Bible. Here is a helpful, and brief, history of the KJV from St. Helen’s Church, Bishopsgate in London.

In the video, the narrator answers the following questions:

  • Was it the first translation in English?
  • Was it King James’ idea?
  • Who was the King James Version against? Was it…
    • … anti-Protestant?
    • … anti-Catholic?
    • … anti-Calvinist?
    • … anti-Puritan?
  • Was it a fresh translation straight from the original languages?
  • Was it the most popular Bible of its time?

At the end of the video, he shared a very interesting quote (considering the individual who said it):

“We are a Christian culture, we come from a Christian culture, and not to know (of) the King James Bible is to be, in some small way, barbarian.”
—Richard Dawkins
