Did the Biblical Writers Always Understand They Were Recording the Word of God?

Posted on August 10, 2012 Posted by Blue Letter Bible

Have you ever wondered if the writers of the Bible always knew they were writing the very words of Scripture?

As we look at the various ways in which divine inspiration occurred we will find that the writers did not always know that they were recording Holy Scripture.

The Bible emphasizes that God gave His word in various ways.

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Sometimes The Writers Did Not Recognize They Were Writing Scripture

Sometimes the writers understood what they were writing, but did not recognize their words as being divine. For example, in his prologue Luke informs us that his work was a result of careful historical investigation

Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed (Luke 1:1-4).

Sometimes They Understood And Recognized They Were Writing God’s Words

The Bible also gives examples where the writers were conscious that they were recording divinely inspired words as well as understanding what they were saying. Paul, for example, realized that he was writing divinely authoritative truths.

We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, God’s word, which is also at work in you believers (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

At Times They Recognized What They Were Writing But Did Not Understand It

There were other times that the writers did not know the import of their words even though they realized that they were divinely inspired. After receiving prophetic messages from God, the prophet Daniel asked what they meant.

As for me, I heard but could not understand; so I said, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these events?” He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words are concealed and sealed up until the end time” (Daniel 12:8-9).

We note that Daniel was specifically told that the understanding of these events will not be until the time of the end.

An Example Of Neither Understanding Nor Recognizing

In a few instances the statements of Scripture were not understood by those giving them nor were recognized as part of Scripture.

And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” Now this he did not say on his own authority, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation (John 11:49-51).

Summary

Divine inspiration deals with the words, not the people. It is not the people who were divinely inspired, but rather their words were accurately recorded. Consequently we find examples in Scripture of people not understanding what their authoritative words meant. For example Luke understood what he was writing but did not appreciate at the time that his words were divinely inspired. On the other hand the Apostle Paul understood what he was writing as well as recognizing that it was divinely authoritative. Daniel recognized he was recording God’s Word but did not understand the meaning of some of the things he recorded. In the case of Caiaphas he did not even realize that he was speaking divine truth neither did he understand all that it meant. We conclude that the doctrine of divine inspiration does not necessitate the people always understanding what they wrote or said.

Is it possible to be inspired today; not by writing something new but rather expounding some beautiful truth from scripture?
I am thinking particularly of some of our great uplifting hymns.

Although not one jot or tittle shall be added or taken away (paraphrase), I have no doubt Yahweh’s holy spirit inspires individuals to share His already-established love and truths through various ways.

Is it possible to be inspired today? Wow good question. YES And this is the reason why.

Do you have Holy Spirit, or born from above, or Christ In You. If yes, then yes. HOW?

God is spirit, God made and gave something to you personally for YOU. Your spirit designed for you and only you. So God speaks to your spirit with in and your spirit communicates to your mind.

It had to be this way, think about it. What happened to Moses when he faced God in the Mt.? You know the story. This is how He communicates to His children, so He doesn’t blast them away with His LIGHT. God is light and in Him is all Love. ALL means all, not one splinter of evil, why do I mention this? It’s a little clue for us to throw away negative thoughts and it shows us that thought wasn’t from God.

One thing we may struggle with is, “was that God inspiring me to do that one thing?” Good question?

Well we have the Word to bounce, filter, match up to our thoughts, if they (our thoughts) don’t line up to the Word. Well guess what? It’s not of God, it’s just you thinking, or it’s your past old man nature trying to creeeeep back in. Take a stand and say nope, take a hike thought and move on. That’s just one clue, and there’s many more. And the more you know, the better your off. It’s knowing the Word.

Inspire means = in spirit action, inspiration.

That means you have to be in fellowship with Him for Him to inspire you. If your out of fellowship (broken fellowship) out of alinement and harmony with God? How can He? JOHN talks about this remember?
This is another clue for us all, how it all works.

Then after studying the Word and becoming mature on the Word and walking the 3 fold walk, Love, Light, Circumspectly for a while you MAY move into understanding the 5 spiritual senses on how He works with you, how He shows you things, and believe me, If God is walking and talking with you by revulation, you’ll know it. That being said, you still control your mind and bounce all your thoughts off the Word.

      Anyway I hope that helps?

This is a very interesting blog today. I guess I took for granted that “everyone” knew what they were writing and saying (for example, hear it, say it, write it and re-read it)–that they “knew” it was Divine and would be preserved for eons.

Rhetorical question – Are the times we live out our lives for GOD today any less “biblical” than in recorded times of the past?

Something to ponder – because the term “most excellent” in Act 23:26 is used in speaking to a government official and Luke’s introduction of Act 1:1. I have had it explained that both Luke’s accounting of the “Good News”, Luke 1:3 and his recording entitled “Acts” were written legal defense’s for Paul’s trial in Rome, Act 25:11.

I would tend to agree that writers have various amounts of illumination. Paul was taken up into some kind of heavenly vision and given some special insights he was still trying to sort out later in his life, but he was absolutely committed to seeking and doing Gods will. The disciples all ran off in fear when Christ was arrested (this was after Peter “knew” Jesus is Gods son.). As a musician I can say the demarcation point for Gods work and my sweat is always a mystery. Ultimately I seek to be obedient in the things I know (resist sin etc) and entrust my work to God. As a songwriter it humbles and humors me how often I don’t really know what peoples reactions will be to a song…and ultimately we humans really don’t understand ourselves or the full impact of our work, thankfully God does. This also would mean that, yes, even though we are stubborn, slow, sinful erring humans…God can perfectly execute His will in scripture being what He intended it to be.

Not to rant, but this would also bring the point home that we Christians are to be little living scriptures in our relationship to God through Jesus Christ. It’s probably fair to say we don’t always know exactly where, when and how God is illuminating us and using us as His witnesses…I have found some of my more powerful moments as a witness went by without my even knowing I was “testifying”.

It is wonderful to think that because God’s word is living and active everytime anyone speaks it, it will create a living active divine inspired moment. Whether it be from His written word or a divine moment of the Holy Spirit using a servant of the most high God to speak a word of wisdom or or some other word of encouragement from the Father’s heart. It is so easy to get caught up in the mundane routine of daily life and by doing so forget that we are living breathing epistles of the Father’s heart.

    Hi Chris~

Perhaps you could clarify something. Your post is on whether “…the writers of the Bible always knew they were writing the very words of Scripture,” but in the last category, your example of someone “neither understanding nor recognizing” is Caiaphas, but Caiaphas wasn’t a writer of Scripture. It would have been John who had been inspired to write this account.

    Thanks and God bless you!

As I was reading, I appreicate the direct scripture that was included.
Anytime were reading scripture, we should be examing ourself, being honest with God, and asking for forgivness for our mistakes.
Knowing, at that moment, were receiving God’s present (Gift) right now! The present is that we are alive and can comprehend, and have the opportunity to take action to become closer to God, strengthen or grow our realationship with Christ.
I believe it happens many different ways, for me though, the start is the conversation and request to him that this is important. I want, need and ask for his help, in this. Then Faith, knowing your request will be done, believeing not what is seen or heard, but what is unseen and unheard, receiveth through the spirit, from God. Also, being built up by each and every word of scripture, which is timeless.
Ok, I didn’t know I was going to write that much, This is my best understanding of it and my experiance.
    Thank you all.

    Hi Steve Morrow,
when you say loving the Lord, does that mean only Jesus? If so would it be more respectful to say that we love God the father for working out our salvation by giving us His son Jesus. And thank Jesus for doing it.

I get confused about the trinity. I love the Father so much and i trust the words of Jesus when He says in John 7:16-18 completely and that In philipians Jesus is the image of the unseen God. But i pray to the father and ask in Jesus name. I dont have a close relationship with Jesus like i do with the Father so am i still saved?

I have repented and asked for forgiveness and trust that Jesus has forgiven me through his blood and he is the only way to the Father but i am still struggleling in trying to get close to Jesus as i dont want to forget about the father.

    • Dana says

      August 15, 2012 at 6:25 pm

Steve, do not concern yourself with the trinity. The concept is not Scriptural and was borrowed from pagan Babylonianism and Egyptian mythology. Your instincts to recognize the Creator as both your Father, and the Father of your Master, Yahushua Messiah are correct. Paul declares this to be so at the beginning of every one of his epistles. Once you allow yourself the freedom of departing from the pagan trinitarian construct, the Scriptures will come alive to you because you will no longer have to be subconsciously overlooking the simple truths of what the Scripture declares.

I think we all experience some vacillation in our relationships with Elohim as Father and Messiah as Master. A father image is much easier for us to warm up to; and we do not have a counterpart in our life to the role of a Master unto whom we must yield total allegiance and subservience. I find that an appreciation for Yahushua as one who died for me to obtain reconciliation that was otherwise inaccessible to me opens my heart to want to sit at his feet and lap up every word and obey every command from his lips.

Once you clearly understand that Yahushua was the SON of Elohim and discard the notion that he IS Elohim, you will find your appreciation for what he has done for you is actually magnified many times over your current respect for his life, death and resurrection; and it will help you distinguish the nature of the relationship you should have with him as your Master, and with Yahuweh as your Elohim.
