News spread rapidly this week about the passing of my dear friend and Christian mentor, Elisabeth Elliot Gren. Elisabeth often encouraged her listeners with these words: “Remember, you are loved with an everlasting love and underneath are the everlasting arms!” I rejoice to know that she was welcomed into her Beloved’s arms on June 15, 2015.
God’s calling on Elisabeth’s life was undeniable. I once heard her say,
“From the time I was a young girl, I understood the seriousness of my personal responsibility to God, in light of His marvelous gift of salvation.”
This world renowned missionary, author and speaker was wife to Jim Elliot, who was murdered in 1956 by the Aucas tribe in Ecuador. Naturally, Elisabeth was devastated; but knowing the sovereignty of God was at work in this tragedy, she did not sit around and “lick her wounds.” She continued to minister in the jungles of South America, working among the very tribe who took the life of her husband and four other American missionaries.
Elisabeth was passionate about helping others come to know and trust in the God of the Bible. Her counsel from the Word brought strength and joy to millions around the world, and we will miss her.
I’ve had the privilege of working at Blue Letter Bible for over a decade now, and I was thrilled when we were given the opportunity to partner in ministry with Elisabeth Elliot and her husband, Lars Gren. We invite you to listen to her messages in our BLB audio library. You can also visit her website at elisabethelliot.org for a comprehensive list of her books and audio studies.

June 21, 2015 at 10:21 pmIn 1993, I first heard Elizabeth Elliot’s radio broadcast on my drive to work. (1360AM Phoenix AZ) From that day forward, I eagerly tuned in to her message during my commute to work. She cut through the noise in my life with discerning truth. Those many broadcasts, strung together, changed life, prepared me for parenthood and deepened my relationship with my Savior. I had always hoped to have met her or hear her speak, but I do feel blessed to have been touched by her books and broadcasts.
