Each month, we will be highlighting a particular theological topic here at the BLB blog. This month, we are highlighting the topic of soteriology—the doctrine of salvation through Jesus Christ. The following is adapted from the commentaries of F.E. Marsh, coming soon to the BLB.
Here are 6 statements pertaining to the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins.
This was a…
…Necessary Sacrifice.
“For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and [as a sacrifice] for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.”
(Romans 8:3 KJV)
…Offered Sacrifice.
“He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily…since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.”
(Heb. vii. 27).
…Removing Sacrifice.
“But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
(Hebrews 9:26)
…Perfect Sacrifice.
“But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God”
(Hebrews 10:12).
…Accepted Sacrifice.
“And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
(Ephesians 5:2)
…Substitutionary Sacrifice.
“Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.”
(1 Corinthians 5:7)

November 26, 2012 at 2:07 pmDon’t forget “Propitiatory Sacrifice”: Romans 3:25 “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”

November 26, 2012 at 7:10 pmHi Everyone who uses the BLB, and find it as a resourceful tool, like myself. I am imploring and encouraging every user to contribute at least $10.00 per month to this noble site. There are brothers and sisters who are laboring in love for us to have such an amazing resource. At $10.00 per month with 70,000 users, they would receive a little over $8M for the year which would provide more resources and a good salary for all the workers, the scripture says, a workman is worthy of his hire. I am appealing to everyone to give.everyone who uses blue letter knows that we have learned a lot and have been encouraged. Set up a re-occuring contribution today, and let’s expand the kingdom of God!Let’s do this!!!!

November 27, 2012 at 9:22 amI’d only add that Hebrews 9:26 (as mentioned in the post) speaks of eternity as well. Jesus sacrifice is eternal.

November 27, 2012 at 9:51 amSUFFICIENT SACRIFICE. A key subtopic for the sacrifice of Christ is the fact that his sacrifice was sufficient. Romans 5:12-21. It was not the blood of rams and bulls but the blood of our SAVIOUR that rent the veil in two!
