The following has been adapted from Don Stewart’s FAQs, available at the BLB.
The Holy Spirit works in ways beyond our understanding. Jesus compared the Spirit to the wind:
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
(John 3:8)
This reveals several things about the work of the Holy Spirit.
As He Desires
The Holy Spirit works in a sovereign manner. He works in the way He desires. The work of the Spirit is in accordance to the purposes of God. As the wind blows where it wishes, so the Spirit of God works where He desires.
Invisible
Like the wind, the work of the Holy Spirit cannot be seen with our eyes. We see the results of the wind but not the wind itself. The same holds true for the work of the Spirit. The Spirit’s work in a person’s life is invisible to everyone. Yet the results of that work-a changed life-can, like the results of the wind, be observed.
Powerful
We have all seen the wind whip up in a powerful manner. The Spirit also works in a powerful manner when He touches someone’s life.
On the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came down upon believers, He did so accompanied by the sound of a mighty rushing wind.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
(Acts 2:2)
Consequently, we cannot limit His ministry. As the wind is invisible, powerful, and blows where it wishes, so also is the work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we must always be careful not to try to make Him conform to the way we believe He will work.

September 25, 2012 at 11:31 amThis website has been a blessing to me for many years. As a pastor, I realize the Holy Spirit has been done a tremendous injustice by people that want to box Him into their denominational perspectives. He works outside of human boundaries, human understanding, and human direction. He is the Third Person of the Godhead, and should be given equal reverence as such. He is the One accomplishing the will of God in this present age by finding a willing bride for the Son just like in Genesis 24. Thank you BLB for not yielding to modern compromise, and promoting the truth of the scriptures. I will let you know if I ever felt you were doing anything otherwise. May God bless and prosper this ministry for as long as it brings Him glory.

September 26, 2012 at 6:38 amJust this morning, I was thinking about the passages on the gifts of the Spirit and that Paul says to earnestly seek them. Seems like I used to hear so much more about that from the pulpit but no longer. I don’t think it is something we can ignore, but most churches/christians don’t give it near enough consideration. Why, I wonder?

September 25, 2012 at 4:49 pmTo walk in the spirit means to walk in submission to God’s commandments trusting in the blood of Jesus to cleanse us from all of the unrighteousness of our own efforts to walk in obedience. God refers to his commandments as the light for our path and says that they are altogether righteous. God tells us if we walk in the light as he is in the light then the blood of Jesus will cleanse us from all of the unrighteousness of our sins which are past. We are free from the condemnation of the law of sin and death because of the blood of Jesus. If we walk in the spirit, we are walking in the paths the commandments of God have laid out for us trusting in the blood of Jesus to cleanse us from our own infirmities. The commandments are the light of our path. The carnal man is at enmity against the commandments of God and cannot walk in those commandments. The spirit led man has made peace with the commandments of God through the blood of Jesus and is able to walk in the commandments of God without being condemned by the law of sin and death. We now walk in the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus. We are free to walk in the commandments of God without being condemned. We are free to confess our sins and repent of walking in enmity against God and every day just submit ourselves once again to our loving Saviour and walk in all of his commandments. Practically speaking, that means rejoice in the freedom from condemnation and do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. If you are cleansing your soul (the thoughts of your heart) by giving it a daily washing by the water of the word, praying about everything, entering into the gates of the temple of the Lord with thanksgiving and praise, you will be walking in the spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Read your bible, pray, rejoice, get knowledge and with the knowledge get understanding. Let your love abound more and more in all knowledge and all judgment. That is what walking in the spirit means.
Deu 8:6 KJV – Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
Rom 8:7 KJV – Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Gal 5:16 KJV – [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:25 KJV – If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal 6:16 KJV – And as many as walk according to this rule, peace [be] on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.
Eph 2:10 KJV – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Eph 4:1 KJV – I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
Eph 4:17 KJV – This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Eph 5:2 KJV – And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
Eph 5:8 KJV – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

September 27, 2012 at 12:31 amHi Sherry,
There is another dimension of being led by the Spirit and walking in the Spirit that I wanted to add. If a person is a true born from above believer, the actual living spirit of that believer has a living connection with the Spirit of God. This connection will have its guide in the scriptures but the Spirit can also speak in giving direction or revealing and discernment.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
That verse is not a metaphor or code for you only get this by reading your bible! Bibles were not mass produced then. We walk in faith, knowing who Jesus is. The Spirit of God will also open up the meaning of scripture giving revelation and insight in the spiritual truth of Jesus or God’s train of thought as connected with other scriptural truths of Jesus.
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
How does it happen when a believer is pressed or impressed to know or do a thing and it is revealed as guidance from the Holy Spirit; or perceive, discern when something is not God. These are spiritual faculties or abilities of the new made alive spirit in the believer.
1 John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
What about the true Holy Spirit gifts of word of knowledge, word of wisdom, dreams, visions, prophesying, tongues and interpretations, etc., operating through the believer? (We are told not despise prophesying.) I am sure almost every true believer has a story of how they ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where something lost or needed was, heard it and found it!
Have there been abuses surrounding receiving these kinds of spiritual directions by the Holy Spirit? Yes, throughout the christian churches for centuries from religious unbelievers and carnal believers. But God still moves in these ways. He hasn’t said He has stopped, only man has said He has.
John 14:17 [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Act 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
Jhn 4:24: God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.
Act 8:29: Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. [Phillip was not an apostle. He was considered one of the seven serving in the ekklesia.]
Act 18:5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit….
The scriptures are important in learning the thoughts and ways of God, but Jesus also said:
John 5:39-40: Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
How will true believers know what these works are if not told by the Holy Spirit and received in faith? Many things in my daily life I have received from the Holy Spirit’s direct communication in my spirit, to my mind. Things like hearing warnings, directions or intuitive knowing that have kept me from getting hurt or to help or comfort another person, without a scripture verse. It was just a knowing. And there were many directions I missed obeying, and knew it afterward!
These are just some of the spiritual realities I think and pray about. I wanted to share them for you to bring to your own, and anyone’s, prayer times with God. Or not. His ways and thoughts are higher than ours and bigger than our finite understanding of the scriptures. Without Him, we can do nothing.
Peace,
Dee

September 25, 2012 at 12:58 pmTalk about some vague descriptions!
Here is how the Holy Spirit works:
1. He baptizes you into Christ’s death so that you no longer have to be a servant of sin:
I Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”
Romans 6:4 “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
2. He seals you to insure your eternal life until the rapture of the Body of Christ:
Ephesians 1:13 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”
Ephesians 4:30 “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
3. He teaches us the deep things of God as we read God’s Word so that we may use the mind of Christ in our lives.
I Corinthians 2:10 “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
I Corinthians 2:13 “Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
4. He increases our suffering so that we may come into the knowledge of the truth.
Romans 8:26-27 “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
I Timothy 2:4 “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”
Sherry says
September 25, 2012 at 3:35 pmEric, I really appreciate your comments. However, I believe you have missed the mark on item number 4. When Paul says “the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities” he is not saying the Spirit increases our infirmities, but that the Spirit helps our infirmities become of value to us by helping us to pray in the midst of our infirmities and turning all things to work together for our good.
Also, I don’t see the connection between 1 Tim 2:4 and your conclusion especially since the previous three verses are talking about praying so that we lead a quiet and peaceable life:
1Ti 2:1 KJV – I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men;
1Ti 2:2 KJV – For kings, and [for] all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
1Ti 2:3 KJV – For this [is] good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
1Ti 2:4 KJV – Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
What I most appreciate about your comments is the fact that you gave direct statements asserting what the Holy Spirit does and gave the scripture to support your statements. I also appreciate your taking the time to admonish the author of the post for failing to adequately expound upon the scriptures. I view your post as an excellent example of communicating with the one who teaches. Thank you for that. I agree with your assessment. We have been given so much direct instruction as to how the Holy Spirit operates it seems naive to say we can’t know how it operates. Of course, he operates of his own accord, but we have a lot of direct information. However, the author is also correct that the Holy Spirit is spirit (not flesh) therefore, the Holy Spirit doesn’t operate on the same plane as we do. I think that may be what the author is going for. He does specific things, but he does it in the spirit and not in the flesh. Therefore, when we look at the flesh expecting to see the things of the spirit, we often miss the working of the Holy Spirit.
It is like the wind moves the leaves of the tree, but we don’t actually see the force that is moving the leaves. We see the leaves move and know the wind has moved them.
Thanks for the good conversation.

September 26, 2012 at 1:09 pmThe context of Romans 8:26-27 is suffering (going back to Romans 8:18). Knowing all things work together for good in Romans 8:28 means that we know that the suffering works for good, as Romans 8:18 says. So, we shouldn’t worry about the extra suffering we go through in order to come into the knowledge of the truth.
I Timothy 2:4 comes in because Romans 8:27 says that the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us according to the will of God. I Timothy 2:4 tells us that the will of God is for all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Since the Romans were already saved, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us by helping us come into the knowledge of the truth. The way we do that is by suffering so that we do not rely upon the flesh to serve God, but walk in the Spirit, which is the whole point of Romans 6-8. Therefore, Paul is showing how suffering helps us come into the knowledge of the truth. Since that is what the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, He must be interceding to increase our suffering so that the will of God is accomplished in us, i.e., coming into the knowledge of the truth, which is precisely why Romans 8:26 says that the Holy Spirit helps our infirmities. He doesn’t help us overcome our infirmities, but He helps our infirmities increase for the furtherance of God’s will to be accomplished in our lives.

September 25, 2012 at 2:27 pmWonderful teaching Eric,
Here’s more for the pastors:
1. The Holy Spirit is the one who God uses to bring revelation to our spirits of Who He is and His Purposes regarding His Son, He is the one who comforts the believer in this way.
2. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a gift of Father God.
Luke 11:13: If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
3. Jesus said:
John 14:26 But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
4. The Holy Spirit was the voice of the prophets, the one IN the prophets (not on them as is taught in Christian theology), inspiring them what to prophesy about the coming Messiah, the nation of Israel, the New Covenant and the times of the end of this age.
1Pe 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace [that should come] unto you:
1Pe 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
5. He is the one who reveals the eternal life given to saints by God through faith in Jesus the Messiah!
6. He is the one who killed Ananias and Saphira for their hypocrisy.
7. He is the one who administers and operates the gifts in true believers. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are by the Holy Spirit.
8. He is the one holding back the full wrath of God upon this wicked earth.
9. He is the one who is hurt by all the compromise of true believers with the apostasy in the Christian religion and the world, just to save their own worldly, carnal skins.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Grace, Peace and Truth is in the Messiah,

September 26, 2012 at 1:14 pmAll wonderful points, Dee. I love point #4 because it speaks to the reliability of the Bible as God’s holy, perfect word without error. We can trust God’s Word today in the English language, because He promised to perserve it for us (Psalm 12:6-8), provided we are not using a translation from a corrupt text of course. This is all possible because the Holy Spirit spoke through the writers of the Bible, rather than just merely being on them.
Dee B says
September 27, 2012 at 12:51 amEric, even with a corrupt text, the Holy Spirit can give us a revelation of the truth underlying the mangled translation. I have my preferences but there are times I will go to a corrupted translation to see how man interpreted something, while asking the Holy Spirit to help. I am so aware of my limited, finite understanding that I become afraid to use my own thoughts to interpret. I know I can be smart and clever in my flesh. The Holy Spirit has to open it up for me, and He has done so.
As for the Spirit of Jesus in the prophets, the Holy Spirit gave me the revelation of that truth after many, many years of believing and teaching otherwise. Until one day, after reading it many times, it was like the Holy Spirit said to stop and read it! Then, like you, I saw other scriptures which showed the quality of God’s voice in the prophets and their conversations with Father God–not temporary. Amazing!
Also, Eric, I got your meaning on suffering but not as applied to Romans 8:27. I will read over the chapter and your comments again.
Peace,
Dee
Eric says
September 27, 2012 at 1:09 pmThat’s a great testimony, Dee. I do the same thing with other translations some times, but rarely. That is very good to recognize the flesh that tries to give you a different interpretation of scripture. It is always good to keep in mind the deceitfulness of the heart in trying to get us to follow its desperate wickedness (Jeremiah 17:9).
What I’m saying regarding Romans 8:27 is that it tells us that the Holy Spirit makes intercession according to God’s will. So, the Holy Spirit’s helping of our infirmities (Romans 8:26) must be in line with God’s will. I Timothy 2:4 says that, for the believer, God’s will is for us to come into the knowledge of the truth. So, the Holy Spirit must make intercession for us with regard to our infirmities so that we come into the knowledge of the truth. As you know, the flesh hinders us from coming into the truth. Therefore, the Spirit must beat the flesh down by increasing our infirmities so that the will of God is accomplished in our lives. I realize this flies in the face of what modern Christianity would say. However, if “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18, still in the same context, by the way), then, in the eternal view of God, suffering is a good thing. So, why not increase our suffering so that our glory is also increased via coming into the knowledge of the truth. Thus, the Holy Spirit helps our infirmities, meaning He increases them.
Dee B says
September 27, 2012 at 1:46 pmEric,
I follow you up until you get to this part and its explanation: “Therefore, the Spirit must beat the flesh down by increasing our infirmities so that the will of God is accomplished in our lives…So, why not increase our suffering so that our glory is also increased via coming into the knowledge of the truth.”
Yes, suffering in this life is a good thing and we must embrace it because people, and especially believers, can’t get away from it. Believers get it by God’s will in sojourning on the earth, living, persecution and chastening, among other things.
But, except for God’s chastening to bring about repentance for current unrighteous deeds, I don’t see the Holy Spirit increasing suffering by beating “the flesh down by increasing our infirmities so that the will of God is accomplished in our lives”. In fact, in that same context, we are told to know and reckon the flesh as crucified with Jesus, ourselves, present our bodies a living sacrifice, (Romans 12:1-3), and renew our minds to God’s will. The Holy Spirit and Jesus intercedes for us in this walk.
Kindly help me to see your understanding with a scripture reference or two testifying to your understanding. I don’t see the scripture for this, although I do see the Holy Spirit comforting us.
Grace and Peace!
Dee
Eric says
October 1, 2012 at 1:31 pmHi Dee,
You’re right in mentioning Romans 12:1 that we have to present our bodies as living sacrifices. What I’m saying is that the Holy Spirit increases our physical infirmities so that we get to the point where we make the decision to present our bodies as living sacrifices.
Paul says in I Corinthians 9:27 that, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
So, it is the believer who actually beats the flesh down by counting the flesh as dead so as to walk in the Spirit. However, the Holy Spirit helps in this process by helping our infirmities (Romans 8:26-27) so that we make the decision to count the flesh as dead.

Jhn 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
Jhn 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
Jhn 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Jhn 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Jhn 16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Jhn 16:10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Jhn 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Jhn 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Jhn 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Jhn 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.
Jhn 16:15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.
Jhn 16:16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Jhn 16:17 Then said [some] of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
Churches are storehouses and indeed places of worship. The comfort and support of these places, exclusiveness and too much religion however divert the testimony of Christian sects. Christians are discomforted with the inherent message of their creator. They are stalled in solace and comfort. Commonly Christians commit less than the whole effort necessary to share the gospel of salvation lest they offend. There is finality to opportunity. A quiet example and loving spirit must eventually hazard the fire to preach the treasure of God. The great command is not sufficiently heeded. To our shame this country, and the world is not sliding apart from God anymore; it appears to be hellbent.
Act 13:38 Be it known unto you therefore, men [and] brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
Act 13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Act 13:40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;
Act 13:41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.
