The Christian is Ever-Increasing in Knowledge

Posted on September 24, 2012 Posted by Blue Letter Bible

The following has been adapted from the commentaries of F.E. Marsh, a new resource coming soon to the Blue Letter Bible!

Once the Christian is saved, his or her knowledge does not stay at its present state; rather, by God’s grace and through His Word, the Christian ever increases in knowledge.

Here are a few areas in which the Christian is continuously growing in knowledge:

Increasing in the knowledge of God as we walk worthy of Him, and are fruitful in every good work. “so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10).

Increasing in the knowledge of Christ and becoming like Him in character, as we walk in fellowship with Him. “learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29).

Increasing in the knowledge of His will. “And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Colossians 1:9).

Increasing in the knowledge of His love, by being taken up with Him who loves us. “to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19).

Increasing in the knowledge of His power by trusting “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection” (Philippians 3:10).

Increasing in the knowledge of His glory by looking to Him. “For God…has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” 2 Corinthians 4:6).

Increasing in the knowledge of His purpose, as we are taught by the Spirit through the Word. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13).

Using Scripture, tell us: in what other ways does the Christian grows in knowledge?

proverbs 2:5 also, “Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.” And 1:7 also, “The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, [But] fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Well, I sorta like Hebrews 5:14. To discern is to have knowledge. And to be able to eat strong meat be it in the natural or spirit takes teeth…or understanding to break things apart so they may be properly used within the body.

II Corinthians 8:7, “But just as you abound in everything, in faith and utterance and knowledge and in all earnestness and in the love we inspired in you, see that you abound in this gracious work too.”
Just as the apostles’ calling to spread the love of Christ was issued by our Lord, so, we too, with the abundance of all things spiritual, are to step out in faith, “speak the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15) with the wisdom, understanding and counsel revealed by the Holy Spirit in His Word, seriously, lovingly and graciously. May the Lord richly bless you.
