The following has been adapted from the commentaries of F.E. Marsh, coming soon to the Blue Letter Bible.
Jacob’s ladder is a type of Christ (John1:51). In other words, Christ is the only Way between God and man. He is-
1. An Opportune Way, for the man in danger, even as the manslayer found the way to the city of refuge to be (Deut 19:3).
“You shall measure the distances and divide into three parts the area of the land that the LORD your God gives you as a possession, so that any manslayer can flee to them.”
(Deuteronomy 19:3)
2. An Open Way, for He has removed the barrier of sin away, by the sacrifice of Himself (Heb. 9: 26).
“But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
(Hebrews 9:26)
3. An Original Way, for there never was such a way opened as Christ has made by His death (Heb. 10:20).
“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water”
(Hebrews 10:19-22)
4. An Omnipotent Way, as they who walk in it find, for they are protected by the Savior’s presence and power (Isa. 35:8, 9).
“And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
the unclean shall not pass over it.
It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.
No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.”
(Isaiah 35:8-9)
5. The Only Way to God (John 14:6), blessing, salvation, and usefulness (John 10:9).
“Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”
(John 14:5-6)
“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”
(John 10:9, Jesus speaking)

September 17, 2012 at 1:04 pmThe Way of Holiness described in Isaiah 35:8-9 does not mean that no harm will befall us on this earth. Rather, Isaiah is referring to God’s kingdom on earth, when the saved will walk to Jerusalem to worship the Lord without anyone interferring.

September 17, 2012 at 2:22 pmHi Eric,
I see Isaiah 35:8-9 KJV, also as a literal (which I believe you are saying) description of a Walk in the Kingdom on Earth. That quoted verse cannot be separated from Isaiah’s inspired words in the previous chapter. (Isa 34:8 KJV) Isaiah has a message from Jehovah God to His saints, (both Jews and gentiles, and we can ignore it for the sake of poetic license.) Isaiah 34:4-6 seems to line up with Matthew 24:29-31 and Rev. 6:13-14 as a description of the time he is exhorting the elect nation of Israel to look forward to in hope.
Yes, Jesus is the Way; He told us that Himself (John 14:4-6 KJV). But Marsh’s use of this verse as a description of the Messiah (“Christ”) is more “poetic” and allegorical than truth. His religous use obscures the meaning of lions and beasts and fools walking there upon the highway–gives no explanation for it. Most significantly, it passes over verse 10 which shows the redeemed going up to Zion with songs and everlasting joy where sorrow and sighing will, indeed, in reality, flee away. Believers, saints of God, must not lump the promises for the nation of Israel into a one dimension “christian” view. I do not believe this is an inspired commentary of this text. What a shame!

Dee

September 18, 2012 at 1:04 pmI agree 100%. That is exactly why I made my comment. It is pretty selfish of us to try to take a promise made to Israel and apply it to us, and, as you mention, we lose the significance of the passage by doing so. Excellent comment, Dee!

September 17, 2012 at 5:04 pmThis day Israel worships God their King. The shofar is blown to laud their King and awaken the sleeping to this proclamation. Rosh Hashannah recognizes the day Adam and Eve were created 5773 years ago, just the 6th day after the initial act of creation. Israel worships the Creator and looks for another year of existence from Him. Proclaiming God their King may not be understood by peoples who exist within other forms of government. The worshipper wholly surrenders their entirety to their King. I thank my Father Who forgives my intrusions, my unrighteousness for His glory. I pray to be a member of His Body the church and worship with my Christian brethren yet I admire the zeal and the constancy of Israel. Israel loves God.

September 20, 2012 at 7:55 amHi Eric,
They are not “promises”, to be fulfilled. They are fulfilled now, today. Jesus says all those in Him have eternal life now. (John 3:15; 5:39-40; 6:54; 10:28; 17:2) We can’t be raised immortal if that incorruptible eternal life seed does not abide in our new spirit in us already.
Paul is giving us God’s reality, to be seen from another realm in heavenly places, the spiritual realm–more real than the natural realm. Many Christian theologians and teachers like to teach we are “positionally” seated with Christ, as if these truths are a spiritual potential and just require mental agreement to be grasped. But the scriptures say different, whether believers mentally agree and understand or not! Notice, Paul says we have been blessed with all blessings in heavenly in Christ; we have been chosen in Him from before the foundation of the world; we have been crucified with Christ; He has made us acceptable in the Beloved. (Eph 1:3-6 KJV) His declarations are not positional or potential, they have happened already, they are done! Hallelujah! No one can take that away from those born from above, God’s elect. Paul’s revelation to us by the Holy Spirit says that our old man (wicked, sinful human nature) is dead, crucified with Jesus, and we (our new sinless spiritual nature) have been raised with Messiah to the newness of life. John says whosoever is born of God does not sin, cannot sin because of the seed that is in Him. (1 John 3:9) The natural and carnal mind will argue this truth every time! He is telling us that the new spirit of man can not sin. We must believe this to walk in it (Romans 6:8-11 KJV). Otherwise, we will be forever apologizing for and falling into our wicked old nature that has already been crucified with Jesus, rather than reckoning it dead. (To new babe Benjamin: I hope you get to read this!)
We sin from our fleshly minds where ever it is not renewed, or where we are not letting the Holy Ghost lead. John tells us that when this happens, we can confess it, receive spiritual cleansing, and move on, not wallow.(1 John 1:7-9 KJV). This is not arrogance. This is walking with Jesus!
These are the spiritual realities dwelling in the quickened new human spirit and must to be revealed to the human soul to be understood. THE WHOLE OF MAN’S FALLEN HUMANITY IS IN HIS SOUL. Everything he is without God is there. The prophet of God Elijah could not have called down fire on the 450 false prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:22-24 KJV) if he didn’t know he could rely on the reality of God’s will against wickedness. (James 5:17-18) Philip could not have done the will of God, teaching and baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch, and then to find himself spiritually “caught away” to another city to continue preaching (Acts 8:39-40 KJV), if he didn’t believe he could be by God’s sovereign power, not his own. (I like this type of travel!) Chains fell off and prison doors opened when Paul and Silas prayed sang praises to God in jail, and angels unlocked them for Peter. Not only were they not surprised but they didn’t move until the will of God was accomplished. (Acts 16:25-30 KJV) We today are so “surprised” when God shows up!
The natural and carnal mind will never live and walk in this reality. What they do instead is use man’s considerable soulish will power (includes hypnotism and other psychical disciplines) and emotional charisma, aided by satanic powers, to create what appears to be from God. The christian religious church is in an apostatized state because the natural and carnal mind cannot understand or discern the things of God, as we have seen from some of BLB’s choices of blog commentary! Powerful men in the churches have historically relied on false power and lying wonders to manipulate the people. (1 John 2:18 KJV; 2 Cor 11:13-15 KJV; Jude 1:11-13 KJV; Col 2:18 KJV)
Have you ever seen a true hypnotist? I have and it is not pretty. I went to a small show before my new birth, and the raw power in that room and over man’s mind was frightening to me even then. People were moved into a deeper soulish realm of consciousness which had men and women acting like animals, eating onions like apples, laying stiff between 2 chairs and having 2 people sitting on their middle, and just doing things contrary to their usual sensibilities, mostly sexual. The wicked spirit singled me out to come up front but I flatly refused, scared to death! Thank God eh? The hypnotist was a very handsome, charismatic man.
We can see from the world around us that man’s mind, apart from the control by his spirit, is a very potent and dangerous power, which satan has harnessed. Isn’t it the love (rooted in the soul) of money which is the root of all evil, part of the apostasy in Christianity? (1 Tim 6:10 KJV; 2 Peter 2:3 KJV) Satan has (not positionally!) blinded the mind’s of man since Adam agreed with satan’s logical assessment of why he could be like God.
Again, this is why saints are emphatically exhorted to renew our minds, and be renewed in the spirit of our minds (or attitude toward spiritual things; Col 3:1-3 KJV, thinking and applying the thoughts of God and perspective of God’s word by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 10:5 KJV).
I know you know much of this but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to edify the brethren! 🙂

September 20, 2012 at 1:08 pmExcellent post Dee! I hope everyone on this board reads your post. Paul establishes the issue of our justification by faith alone (Romans 3:28) in Romans 1-5. Romans 6-8 is spent showing we are dead to sin and alive to Christ. I love how Paul says in Romans 6:11 “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” I love that “also” because it shows that God has already reckoned us dead to sin and alive unto God. It is now our job to reckon this also. Unfortunately, most Christians never reckon it this way, and get stuck in Romans 7, trying to serve God in the flesh, when we are to reckon the flesh dead and walk in the Spirit, as Paul says in Romans 8. What a blessing to see that you understand this!
Oh that all Christians might believe Romans 6-8 and walk in it!
Eric says
September 20, 2012 at 1:33 pmAlso, Dee, I forgot to thank you for bringing up that the promises to us today have already been fulfilled. We are NOW seated with Christ in heavenly places. Romans 5:9,11 is a great passage, because it says that we have NOW been justified by His blood and have NOW received the atonement. This means we are NOW holy, which is what God says in Colossians 3:12. Since we are NOW holy, we can NOW be in the presence of a holy God, which means the riches of God’s grace have already been poured out upon us in heaven.
You know, if Christians truly believed Ephesians 1, not a single Christian would be depressed. We would all be rejoicing evermore (I Thessalonians 5:16).

Let me add that the behavior of that hypnotist, I have seen and been caught up in in very popular christian ministries and bible schools and bible studies! I believe that is why the Lord had be experience it back then. Except for the Holy Spirit revealing it to my soul, it would still be very scary. Imagine thinking that stuff is the move of God! Moo!

September 20, 2012 at 8:14 amNo, Eric. You are right! Too few. It is not enough to read the words of God in the scriptures. Saints must spend time with God in His Presence so the Holy Spirit can teach them to discern His Truth revealed in the scriptures. We can’t just repeat scriptures. This results in too many carnal believers, swayed by every wind of doctrine.

September 20, 2012 at 3:12 pmHey Jerry S,
I am posting this again from another blog on Hebrews September 14 because your comment is right on!
I have been asked by someone on BLB’s blogs to give concrete examples when I make seemingly sweeping statements about apostasy in christianity, (I guess the scripture isn’t enough to stimulate revelation to the mind), such as this one in my reply to Robert Rosenthal comment to your comments on the 9/14 Hebrews blog, He said, “‘Christian’ means ‘A believer in Christ’….” I said this to Robert not to embarrass him, but because I had a reply to many christians think this way, caught up under the deception and needing to be made free!
I replied, “That is a Webster’s dictionary definition, not the scripture. Your definition is unclear and the Greek word Christos is still untranslated and made into the English word Christ. …So what is the big deal? This English translation not only communicates an incorrect understanding of the Holy Spirits Greek words christos (anointing or to smear), but it obscures the Holy Spirit’s revelation of the…Messiah to us from the scriptures. A person would have to explain its meaning, saying Christ means anointed or Messiah and all the prophesied implications–Jesus is God, the Son of God. Remember, Christianity is a gentile religion…. Is this semantics. No!” (See this scripture, 1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV)
So, the Holy Spirit gave me another good example for all believers to ask Him about, and for people whose natural and carnal minds and imaginations may not be enlightened as they read the scriptures without the Holy Spirit.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses, although they do not claim they are “christians”, DO use christian theological doctrine to twist and insert their doctrines of demons, among other heretics. They claim that “Christ” is the arch angel Michael. (Imagine that!) But anyone reading Jude 1:9 KJV, would know that Michael is not Jesus the Messiah, the King and Lord who has Satan under His feet, because Jesus continually rebukes Satan, as seen in the gospels and Revelations, as Michael dared not do!
The JW’s can do this because “Christ” is not translated from the Greek as Messiah, as it should be, and gentile believers and Jews in christianity, for the most part, have been kept ignorant of this. Otherwise, why would we be refuting a dictionary definition? Would the JW’s say that the Messiah was the arch angel Michael in the face of Hebrews 1:1-2 KJV, and other chapters about the Messiah not being an angel Would they try to prove it from those verses, if it read Messiah instead of Christ? I believe not! Especially since they will not find the word “christ” in the Hebrew “Old Testament” Scriptures. So is the issue against “Christ” (Messiah) as unenlightened folks will say, or is it against Christianity’s natural, carnal, historical attempts to obscure the meaning of the nation of Israel’s roots in Jesus? Yes, He was a Jew, but there is so much more than that in the prophecies and promises of the Messiah to and for the nation of Israel.
Believers, remember this truth and refute the lie with it; preach the truth and co-labor with God to call His elect ekklesia, as the Holy Ghost leads. But don’t let the JW’s into your house; they work to deceive and you may be confused! (2 John 1:10-11 KJV) By the way, I didn’t say it, they is not my words!
For your information: The JW’s claim that as of 2009, they have 7,313,173 (that’s 7 million!) people in 236 lands, with 276,233 having been being baptized into that heresy, and 7,619,270 bible studies! That’s a lot of gentiles (and Jews). People would rather believe that “christ” is an angel rather than the Messiah is God. When I stayed in France for 4 months last year, almost every 10th person who declares a “religion” was Jehovah’s Witness.
Let’s get understanding according to scripture, Saints, and we will not be fooled or confused, and be able to stand strong against that day! Just exhorting and edifying once again! 🙂
Grace and Peace,
Dee
