7 Things Christians Should Be Filled With

Posted on April 26, 2012 Posted by Blue Letter Bible

Scripture tells us that Christians are to be filled…

1. …with the Spirit.

“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).

2. …with comfort.

“I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort…” (2 Corinthians 7:4).

3. …with joy.

“As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy” (2 Timothy 1:4).

4. …with fruit of righteousness.

“filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:11).

5. …with the knowledge of His will.

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Colossians 1:9).

6. …with good things.

“he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty” (Luke 1:52-53).

7. …with all the fullness of God.

“and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19).

To be filled with the Spirit….an awesome experience that is evidenced by speaking with other tongues. (Read Acts)When you have this experience, you will also have joy, at least personally I did and know others that share this same thing. The Bible says that the Spirit will lead and guide us into all truth which of course is the knowledge of Christ and His will. Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirt would be the comforter.
conclusion: If you are filled with the Spirit you will also be filled with the other 6.

Hi J, In 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 it is clear that God determines what gift or gifts each believer receives….for His glory and the benefit of the Church and our Lord’s Great Commission. Note:

“1Corinthians 12:8 = To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,

1Corinthians 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

1Corinthians 12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

1Corinthians 12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.”

I am a Spirit-filled Christian (at least I desire that though I fail often. I am prone to wandering). I have asked many times to be given the gift of Tongues. God has determined at least thus far to not bestow that gift to me. He has given me the gift of exhortation + a good dose of encouragement. Therefore I believe a born again Spirit-filled believer is evidenced not so much by Tongues but rather by the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23 = But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.)

      Blessings to you, dear friend!

        Mathew~

I don’t think James is “deny[ing] tongues” as you have written because he wrote that he has asked the Lord for it “many times.” Also, as the verses he cited prove, believers don’t receive all gifts. Each person receives the gift or gifts needed for God to work His specific purpose and will through that person. Tongues is only one of the gifts, and the only way we “[LIMIT] THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL” is if we deny the gifts that he has given us.

        Have a blessed day!

          Mathew,

On my last post, I said something that might be misunderstood. I wrote that sometimes your explanations go beyond the issues at hand. I don’t mean to imply that I am, in any way, a judge or facilitator as to what you or anyone else can or should write on this blog. I was solely referring to the dialogue between us. Sorry if it sounded otherwise.

        Mathew~

I’m not sure what you mean by “joining forces with [you]” because I disagree with what you wrote. My prayer for James is not that God will give him the gift he wants, but that James will receive the gifts that God wants him to have to use for His glory. We are to pray, “Thy will be done,” not my will be done.

May God’s truth be a blessing that changes us in all things!

Yes, absolutely, all of those who were present on the day of Pentecost were filled and spoke with tongues, but Scripture must be reconciled. In the verses that James cited (I Cor. 12:8-10), the phrases “to one” and “to another” are used nine times, indicating the specific gift that was given to each person.

          Mathew~

If I am wrong, I am open to any logical reasoning supported by Scripture. Please tell me why my interpretation of the phrases “to one” and “to another” in I Corinthians 12:8-10 is wrong.

          Mathew~

I understand the idea of the Holy Spirit and gifts. What I asked of you was to offer a reasonable and biblical answer to prove that my interpretation of I Corinthians 12:8-10 is wrong because they clearly disagree with you. In addition, verse 11b also says that it is the Spirit who “[divides] to every man severally as he [the Spirit] will,” again proving verses 8-10 that every believer doesn’t get every gift. Verses 28-31 say the exact same thing.

I know you have a heart for God and love to share your thoughts; however, sometimes your explanations go beyond the issues at hand as you have done in this dialogue. As you know, we need to rightly divide the Word, and all I am asking you for is a reasoned explanation as to why my explanation is wrong, nothing more. I agree that we are not singing off the same page, but we should be, so if you can tell me my error, please do.

I look forward to hearing from you~

Well all these but one seem to be for all, but the second one seem to be for the individual. Now after reading them again there a few of these that is not commanded of the christians. But they are all at some point in the christian life would be nice to be filled with, depending on the individual situation… 🙂 This was indeed good intentions on the part of the submit-ter.

    Dear “D”~

As you know, the Bible, cover to cover, is for all believers as a whole. It is also for each one of us as individuals. God has given each one of these verses so that we can know that these blessings are, indeed, for each one of us throughout the duration of our earthly sojourn and so we can share our blessings with a dying world. Our goal is to submit ourselves to Christ’s lordship so that we grow in Him in each area of our lives so that these become, not just virtues painted on to suit “individual situations” but so they become the glue that cements every fiber of our spiritual being. I pray that God will bless you with greater insight into these “fillings” and that He will show you how to incorporate all of them into your life through His love and power.

    In Christ~

      Steve~

You’ve given some excellent verses for D. Savannah to study and incorporate into her life. The truly great thing about God’s Word is that it IS true because it is alive. It took me years to realize this. One of my favorite verses is the first one you cited, Matthew 6:33. Through studying the Word, praying, and dying to myself, I have seen a marked difference in my life in every way. It’s not enough for Jesus to be the Savior of our lives; He must also be Lord as your verses illustrate. Thank you for your post.

      God bless you~
