Shortly after God saved me, I was encouraged to join a Bible study at the church I attended. The leader of this Bible study was a thorough student of God’s word. A former drug addict and thief, God saved him as He read a Bible for the first time. This led to any immediate passion for God’s word and a belief in its power. Since then, this old mentor of mine has been daily meditating on Scripture.
One of the first things he taught me was the importance of memorizing Scripture. I will always be grateful for this. There are many reasons we ought to memorize the Word of God, and there are many ways to do it. What I have found most helpful, and what my old mentor taught me, is that memorizing Bible verses that speak about the very power of God’s word is a great place to start. Such verses will only encourage you to love God’s word; they leave you wanting to memorize even more.
Here are the passages I memorized first. I pray that God uses them to aid in your own memorization of His word.
“‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.’ And this word is the good news that was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:24-25).
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
“so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it”
(Isaiah 55:11)
“With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalms 119:10-11)
“The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever;
the rulesfn of the LORD are true,
and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward”
(Psalm 19:7-11)
“you have exalted above all things
your name and your word”
(Psalm 138:2) *this is our ministry verse!
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
“God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
(Numbers 23:19)
“Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers”
(Psalms 1:1-3)
What about you? Do you memorize Scripture? What verses did you begin with?

April 16, 2012 at 3:57 amWEAPONIZE THE WORD OF GOD!
Learn from the Intransigent Iran!
Enrich to the higher level.
Ours is the UPWARD calling
Enrich to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ!
God of ALL grace and mercy has given you all the fuel , hay, wood, raw materials, instruments of faith for this process. He is not a hard task master like Pharaoh.
But He asks, Have I been a land of darkness to you?
A wilderness?
What more shall be done to my garden?
See his tragic, pathos filled question to David?(2Sam.12:8-9).
Jesus did not die intestate. He has given everything for life and godliness. Yet…. come back to the word of God.
Grace, vigorous, verdant, virile, be with you all.

April 16, 2012 at 8:10 amPhilippians 4:13 is one of my first scriptures I learned, which is “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Then I memorized Romans 12:2 which is “And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Since then, Ephesians 6:10 and so many others have become so important to learn memorize and quote to others. My husband and I are challenged each week as we go out in the streets with a street ministry that our Lord has commissioned us to do for the past 4 yrs. Memorizing scripture is essential to christian growth…

April 16, 2012 at 12:30 pm…BY THEM IS YOUR SERVANT WARNED
I asked my Doctor neighbor about the opposite of
PROPHYLACTIC. He gave the ready reply, “STIMULATIVE”!
Thankfully the Word of God has a Preventive and a Stimulative, Curative face, facet aspect. The Cross of the Christ of God is the most poignant, sublime, purgative, cathartic stimulus: response is mine/yours. The word of God detoxifies our system, it is both preventive and curative.
Healing comes, Faith comes, Health comes by hearing..
Thus, ” MEDITATION IS MEDICATION.” His word is backed by the honor of his NAME. Amen.
Grace be with you all.

April 16, 2012 at 1:19 pmI love memorizing Scripture! I’ve memorized several verses on my own simply just by reading them repeatedly but more challenging chapters I’ve memorized with my children, who are 6 yrs old and almost 3 yrs old, as we sing them out loud. We have memorized together Psalm 1, Psalm 23, Psalm 100 and are now working on Psalm 103. They also know other shorter verses like John 3:16, Philippians 4:13, Ephesians 6:1-3, Hebrews 12:2, John 1:29, Psalm 56:4….we also really like Steve Green’s Hide ‘Em in Your Heart which puts Bible verses to song so they are easily memorized and etched upon our hearts 🙂

April 16, 2012 at 1:35 pmI have a bit of a problem with getting chapters and verses straight due to the numbering system but have learned to reference many of the verses above as well as a few others. God endows each of us with different abilites and this is a great article, reminding each serious beliver to learn the scriptures in some fashion or another. Especially us called to minister to others. I have no shame of my Lord and Savior. Rixmohay

April 16, 2012 at 7:00 pmTHE WAY OF LIFE IS ABOVE, HIGH, UPWARD FOR THE WISE – JAMES’ WISDOM, power, FROM ABOVE – , THAT HE MAY DEPART FROM HELL BENEATH. Pr.15:24.
Never settle for the second best. THE BEST is your first amendment right! Here in America, the sky is the limit, if you will not limit the Holy One of Israel(Ps36:5 TLB). Yet…..Ps.107:11. Beware of Mouth – Stoppers(Ps.8), “Pacifiers”, they come in all hues and shapes!) & Well – Stoppers! Be intransigent like the Lion(Pro.30:30), never apostatise, but Apostolicise Acts.2:42.”Receive us; Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me, Be ye followers of me…” – that’s Paul’s plea.
Grace be with you all.

For YHWH sees not as a man sees, man looks on the outward appearance, but YHWH looks on the heart – 1 Sam 16:7
Speak evil of no one, avoid quarreling, be gentle, and show perfect courtesy toward all people – Titus 3:2
Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of YHWH are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them – Hosea 14:9
