The Gospels record that during the six hours Jesus was hanging on the cross He made seven different statements. These statements are of tremendous significance not only because they are the last words of Jesus before His death, but also because they describe the life and ministry of Jesus Christ our Lord.
1. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 24:34).
Even while experiencing the horrible pain of crucifixion, He was praying for the very people who caused His suffering. He came to earth for the purpose of forgiving sinners and He loved them and forgave them up until the end. It was because of man’s sin that He was on the cross—suffering on behalf of that sin.
2. “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).
Not only did Jesus forgive those who crucified Him, He also forgave one of the thieves crucified next to Him. When the thieves were put on the cross both of them cursed Jesus but, as time elapsed, one of the thieves had a change of heart.
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed him, saying, ‘If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.’ But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom’ (Luke 23:39-42).
It was at this juncture that Jesus made His second statement from the cross promising to forgive the repentant thief. Again we see Jesus’ concern for others. His example later led the Apostle Paul to exhort the Philippian church,
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself (Philippians 2:3).
3. “Woman, behold your Son” (John 19:26).
As Jesus continued to suffer on the cross His mind was still upon others. He saw His mother standing near the Apostle John and said, “Woman, behold your son.” He then looked at John and said, “Behold your mother!” By doing this He was entrusting the care of His mother to John. The law required the firstborn son to take care of his parents, and Jesus was obeying the law of God up until the end. Early in His ministry Jesus emphasized His respect for the law:
Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill (Matthew 5:17).
He honored and obeyed the law throughout His life and He also honored the law while suffering His death.
4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
The fourth saying of Jesus from the cross is probably the most difficult for us to understand. The sinless Son of God who had been, from all eternity, in an intimate relationship with His Father, is now spiritually separated from Him. When the sins of the world were put upon Jesus there was, for the first time, a separation between the Father and the Son. The Bible records something happened between them that we can only understand through the eye of faith.
That is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself (2 Corinthians 5:19).
Jesus was suffering the pain and separation that we deserve:
For he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
In order for this to occur, the Father had to forsake the Son and punish Him on our behalf.
5. “I thirst” (John 19:28).
The fifth statement that Jesus made from the cross reminds us again that He suffered as a human being. The Bible says,
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I thirst’ (John 19:28).
He lived as a man and suffered as a man in order that He could identify with suffering humanity. From this statement we observe that Jesus suffered the full physical effect of crucifixion. There was no easing up, for the weight of our sins was placed upon Him.
6. “It is finished” (John 19:30).
The sixth statement from Jesus while on the cross was a cry of victory. The Greek text reads tetelestai, “It is finished.” What was finished? As we consider the life and ministry of Jesus we can think of several things that His death made complete.
He finished the job that the Father gave Him to do. He fulfilled prophecy. He achieved victory over Satan, sin, and death, and He secured salvation for all that would believe. His bringing a new Kingdom to Earth is finished.
7. “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46).
This is the final statement that we have from Jesus before His death. Everything had been completed and now it was time to dismiss His spirit. Jesus had previously made the statement that He would willingly lay down His life for His sheep.
Therefore my Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from my Father (John 10:17,18).
From this we realize that Jesus had to purposely dismiss His spirit; it could not be taken from Him. Unless He desired to die, He would not have had to. Because He was a willing victim, however, He chose to die. Upon making His final statement, Jesus died.
Summary
The seven statements Jesus made from the cross have far-reaching significance for us today. They once again remind us that His death, besides being a fact of history, was much more than that. It was the supreme sacrifice that secured our salvation. His final words show us that we can have the utmost confidence in Him as our Savior.

April 5, 2012 at 5:50 amWhat a tender post. Very appropriate for this time of year. The way the Savior was killed was brutal and it is horrible to imagine. A complete review of his final hours would be incomplete without a consideration of his last words which I have to admit I never did before this read.
I’m reminded of a scene in “The Last Samurai” where the emperor request to know how one of his disavowed yet loyal samurai has died and the samurai’s disciple in turn would rather recount to the emperor how the samurai lived.
Thanks again for the post. I’ve felt impressed to take these 7 statements and focus on one of them each day (How convenient that there’s is one for every day of the week). I might just make it a thing like some form of daily affirmation.
I can tell already my mother will appreciate Wednesdays (Statement 3) since I forget to call every week and the Savior’s words are bellowing in my head, “…Behold your mother! (John 19:26-27).” Emphasis on the exclamation.

April 5, 2012 at 8:53 amMy Sister Julie,
I thuroughly enjoyed your expressions of love to our Savior and Bridegroom Jesus. I have often thought about what you expressed whe you stated, ” Howe can one thank YOU for what YOU have done?”
My prayer has been that our awesome Father and God would give us the words to express to Him and His son great, poetic words of LOVE, (AGAPE), Thankfulness, Honor and admiration.
The gift of God is eternal life and I am thankful to our Father that he has given us this so we can praise Him, His son for ever and ever. This will be one way we can “begin” to thank Him and Jesus.
During a worship service one time we were singing, “Thank you Yahweh (Our God’s name for ever Exodus 3:15 – “God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh,* the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.
This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.
Footnote:
* Yahweh is a transliteration of the proper name YHWH that is sometimes rendered “Jehovah”; in this translation it is usually rendered “the LORD” (note the use of small capital letters).”
I was singing and dancing my love to Him I asked Him to give me words to express my great love for Him and just after expressing that simple prayer He brought to my remembrance that we get to live for ever in His kingdom and will praise Him for ever.
How wonderful is that? !!!!
What an honor and priviledge!!!
God Bless You Beloved of our Father and His Son Jesus!!!!

The thieves still had to pay for their social misdeeds by facing the outcome of any civil justice system.
To be incarcerated and to accept Christ as a personal saviour is good. God works in and out of any walls man will build! Salvation behind bars or salvation a free person is salvation nevertheless and God is glorified.
Being trapped in earthly sins is incarceration in and of itself. How can mankind be free to serve if the servant is trapped. The one thieve that showed respect and reverence to the Christ “found Jesus” at the very last few minutes of his life. End result – to be in paradise as Christ spoke. Freedom from eternal incarceration is no longer his destiny. God is glorified!!!

April 5, 2012 at 5:00 pmAmen! Sister Heidi!
I have often thought about how Jesus had unbroken fellowship with our God and Father and then he who knew no sin became sin 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” God made Jesus sin for us so that we might become righteous before our God!
Oh the hurt he must have felt as God left him. Jesus cried out, My God, My God, why have you forsaken me!
I want to get to that place of unbroken fellowship with our Father and God just like Jesus did. Walking in the Spirit, living in the Spirit and not fulfilling the strong cravings of my lower nature Galations 5:16 “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
I want to identify with Jesus’s sufferings Philipians 3:10 “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,”
I appreciated reading your heart of Love for Jesus!
Thank You Sister!

April 5, 2012 at 8:52 pm4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
This statement is not hard to understand when you know the trinity does not exists. This cry was humanity crying out to deity. The Father did not impregnant the virgin Mary. Your Bible, regardless of version, in Luke 1:35 says that the Holy Ghost (or Spirit) overshadowed Mary… so, according to the Bible the Holy Ghost is really the Father. Interesting enough the Bible also says In John 14:9 “Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” And, in John 10:30 “I and my Father are one”. Jesus had an earthly body yet He was God manifested in the fresh. Hebrews 1:3 explains it further because Jesus was the express image of the invisible God. Which further makes sense of God being in Christ (speaking of the earthly body) reconciling the world unto himself (not themselves). No where in Scripture will you find God referred to as persons. Nor is their prophecy of a soon to be revealed trinity, much less the word trinity either. This is a false doctrine that became widely accepted with the council of Nicea in 325 A.D.
I am a father, a son, and a husband but I am only one person with one name. And, should write a check and sign it with anything other than my name the check won’t clear. That’s why one must be baptized in Jesus name. To be baptized repeating Matthew 28:19 is incorrect. You must obey it not repeat the phrase. The name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost is Jesus. For father is a office or title as well as son. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Christ. For upon his death Scripture tells us h gave up the Ghost.

April 7, 2012 at 12:04 amEXAMINE. CRETIAN OR CHRISTIAN ? 2COR.13:5.
BRO. YOU HAVE ANSWERED DISCREETLY.
But to offer a sacrifice THREE persons are necessary.
Offerer, Offering & Officiating Priest (Heb.7:1). So you find the Father, Son & the Holy Spirit at the cross. Threefold cord of LOVE is not quickly broken (Ecc.4:12). The word of God is not bound or broken. Look at Rom.1:20. So you find the three dimensions wherever you look. Language, for instance, is trinitarian stylistically and structurally. Language is a divine attribute, God spoke first! Look at the Government man devised,Local, State & Federal. Look at music, Melody, Harmony, Rhythm! It goes on…. Paul is right. YOU are without excuse. You make Mat.28:19 sinless Jesus a liar. See Jehovah & Jesus speak the selfsame thing Deu.6:4 & Mark.12:29! Our God is not the Author of confusion. Finally Jesus is going to surrender all to the Father 1Cor.15:24.
How do you expound 1John.5:7? And his name is called The Word of God Rev.19:13.
Also tell me, Who is this Melchisedec?
And what is The Ministry After the Order ( manner, manner of the king) of Melchisedec? This is the only positive, authentic Ministry named in the NT. God abolished the DYNASTIC & inaugurated the DYNAMIC ministry. Our Lord sprang out of Judah. Read Hebrews, before studying Hebrew! Family Dentistry is fine, but family ministry is not so fine! Flesh & blood cannot inherit..
Like NBA or NASCAR team owners, can I launch, start a high-tech church, with a ” state of the art sanctuary” and collect tithes, offerings & tithes of tithes? You answer me. Now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you and all. Amen. P.S: Do you bless the people like this in your church?

April 7, 2012 at 2:39 pmI fear your lack of theological understanding has been clouded by your humanistic indoctrination. You as so many others, simply wish to believe in a non-biblical doctrine. Just as surely as you are one man – there is only one God, and He is not made up of three persons; the same way you are not. Of course, I too can babel trinitarian phrase… you are misguided, errant, and confused. The Kingdom is hide to them that are lost. The twelve disciples were not trinitarian, neither were those at the upper room. Saul, become Paul, was as one God as you can get that is why he looked up to heaven on the way to Damascus and said “Lord, Lord”, which really he was saying Jehovah, Jehovah. To which the voice from heaven replied, “I am Jesus, whom thou persecute”. The voice didn’t say “we are the Trinity,” nor did the voice say “we are the father, son, and Holy Ghost”… it said I am Jesus, the Anointed ONE. I hope and pray that the blindness falls off of your eyes as it did for Saul. He thought he was doctrinally correct, but thankfully he discovered the Truth. They were first called Christians at Antioch, and those at Antioch were ONE GOD, JESUS NAME BELIEVERS, all those who do not believe are following after the way called heresy. Studying some more big, fancy words; but read the Bible and let it plainly say what is written. There is only One God, and His Name is Jesus. He was the Father in Creation, revealed/manifested in the Son in redemption, and come back as comforter as the Holy Ghost in salvation… But still one God, without distinction or separation. Satan doesn’t mind somebody having religion; neither does he mind somebody saying they are Christian when they don’t believe the truth. But Satan hates the Church – which is only comprised of those with the revelation of JESUS, GOD MANIFEST IN FLESH…EMANUEL, GOD WITH US. (not Jehovah junior, nor the second person in a godhead)

Ezk 26:7/28 And, Now,
TRUTH I declare to thee,
Lo, Yet
Three Kings are standing for Persia, and The Fourth doth become
Far Richer Than All,
And according to his strength by his riches he stirreth up the whole,
With The Kingdom of Javan.
Dan 11:3
And a mighty king hath stood,
And
He hath ruled a great dominion, and hath done according to his will;
Dan 11:4
And according to his standing is his kingdom Broken, and Divided
To The Four Winds of the Heavens,
And not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion that he ruled,
For his kingdom is plucked up — and for others apart from these.
Hmmm.. Are not the four winds all peoples, multitudes, languages, tongues?
And in Her, is the prophets…… and all peoples that have been KILLED on the earth!
OH, THAT SECOND DEATH!
