He Is Before All Things

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
(Colossians 1:16-1)

Jesus Christ, the Son of God is before all things. In other words, all things were created through Him and for His glory.

Consider the following passages:

He has always been: “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).

All things were created through Him: “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16).

He upholds the universe: “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3).

He is the beginning: “And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent” (Colossians 1:18).

He is the beginning and the end: “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty'” (Revelation 1:8).

He is the first and the last: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, ‘Fear not, I am the first and the last'” (Revelation 1:17).

He is the life: “the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us” (1 John 1:2).

He is the eternal life: “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20).

He is that eternal life which was with the Father: “the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us” (1 John 1:2).

  1. How Great is our God that he sent his only begotten Son to live among us, to show us the way to eternal life. Without Jesus, we would be lost in our sin. Thank you Lord for your sacrifice!

  2. This has always been my favorite Bible verses to preach from. Jesus is our creator & we are complete in Him. He is my confidence. PD

  3. Is it safe to say that Jesus is the manifestation of God in flesh and that prior to his life in the flesh he is the creator God of the universe, the God of the old testament who appeared to Abraham and spoke to Moses? Is this what the scriptures are portraying?

    • You are correct. Jesus said in John 5:37, paraphrased, that no one had ever seen the Father. Therefore, “the LORD” of Numbers 12, or Yahweh, was the Son of God. Abraham saw God Almighty, El Shaddai, or the Son of God. In whatever “dispensation” of time we have been in, it has always been the Son who “did business” with mankind. Elijah heard the voice of the Son of God, Yahweh.
      Moses and Elijah appear on the mount of transfiguration because they know what the Son of God, Yahweh, looks like and sounds like. Yahweh of the “Old Testament” is the Son of God who becomes human to save. So, His name must reflect His agenda, Yehoshua or Stong’s #G2424 and #H3091. If the Son had come to judge, after John 12, His name would have to have been Jehoshaphat, or Yahweh is judge or judges.

  5. I am small Ps.119:141, but heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him 2Chr.2:6. His word is exceeding broad Ps.119:96. I am undone Isa.6:5. Lord, enlarge my territory, that I may comprehend with all saints the divine dimensions and the things that accompany salvation Heb.6:9.
    He is the Key and the key-holder Rev.1:18.One and Three, three in one.But Paul says invisible things are clearly seen – search the unsearchable! Rom.1:19-20. So in Language same grammatical form can have, can realize different functions – personally One , functionally Three! Let God be God and every man a liar.
    Or take a Chemistry manifestation- Reversible Reaction! The Holy Trinity is the fastest reversible reaction, to me. Perhaps, that is the reason why our Jewish brethren shudder to write His name, because it is incomplete, partial, a veritable lie. We are complete only in Him, that NO flesh may boast, glory is His due. Lord, correct me, but with measure, and fill me without measure. Amen.

    • Faith is, yes I S , the substance! All else is insubstantial.But what, who is faith? Gal.3:23 & 25. Mark the ‘before’ and ‘after’! How should we then live? Eze.33:10. What manner of persons ought ye to be…? 2Pet.3:11-12!! NOW the just (Pro.11:1; 16:11) shall live by faith Heb.10:38, diligently trace the foursome. But the unjust…Rev.22:11. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Grace be with you all. Amen.

  10. I got a lot out of today’s devotion. Jesus Christ truly is the Son of God, and no other way to the Father but by Him!

  12. Matt. 17:5 “While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

    I wonder why God didn’t say hear ye me.

    • He is the appointed and the anointed One. Pl see Heb.1.
      Also 2Pet.1:16-21.
      By the same token why the recurring Revelation chorus, ” He that hath an ear, let him hear..?” Rev.2:7. Master, pierce my ear Ex.21:6. Grace be with you all.

      • Sorry,” approved of God” too !!! By the way, THE DETERMINATE COUNSEL & FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD (Acts.2:22-23; 4:28) make collecting, collating and canonizing plausible and possible, and easy for him. Good idea to have that Staple stuff, “easy” button, handy on our table! Let God be true.. and let go. “Prove me ” NOW ” (Heb.10:38) herewith”,(Mal.3:10) that is the haunting challenge in front of us from our Champion. Help, Lord. Grace be with you all.

      10 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced;

      I wonder why God didnt say they will look upon him who they pierced.

    John 5:19 Then answered JESUS and said unto them verily verily I say unto you the SON can do nothing of HIMSELF but what HE seeth the FATHER do for what things soever HE doeth these also doeth the SON likewise

    • These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true (Rev.19:11) witness, THE BEGINNING OF THE CREATION OF GOD Rev.3:14.
      So does “He is before all things” mean He is the Ancient of Days? “In the beginning God..Therefore let me begin my daily dalliance with him. He is altogether lovely. ” I will love them freely”. Hos.14:4,despite my cuckoldry. Free love,sex; no vex– ation, vanity. Hallelujah. Grace be with you all.Amen.

  15. He is the eternal life: “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20).

    1 John 5:20 stands out to me because of the word TRUE. If He is true and we are to abide ‘in Him’ then we must be genuine and of truth. As Christians there is no room for lies when you are ‘in’ the God of truth.

    If we are in the habit to lie to others our thoughts cannot be trusted because we will freely lie to ourselves. A lie is not trusting of God and the lot He has allowed. How can a liar willingly, selflessly and unguardedly evaluate the truth?

    Self-deception is a powerful tool of the devil and stems from a willingness to lie for self preservation.

    “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

    • Evie, I’m with you – I thank God for never giving up on me, too! I have given up on Him, and walked away from Him, but He has always been right there when I asked Him to forgive me. Thank you, God, for new mercies every morning!

  18. Thank you for the topic today. It cornfirms what I have been feeling in my spirit this week that, I belong to Jesus and the life I live here on earth I live it for HIM alone. I was bought by the blood of Jesus. I live for HIM alone. I love Jesus!

    god and what is His nature. Jesus is the only
    god showed the way to eternal life. Great is His love and power.

    • Look around. Now carnage bloodshed EVEN at funeral. ” O, judgment (commonsense) thou art fled to brutish beasts & men have lost their reason”, sang Shakespeare. Jesus is the Sun of Righteousness (Mal.4:2). Imagine a Sunless world, that is the possibility of a world without Jesus!Tribulation, Great Tribulation galore! Hence we beseech you, persuade people,get ready for the rapture, Jesus, the Bridegroom! Now ‘Virginity Test’ is in the news. But for us CHASTE VIRGINITY (2Cor.11;2-3)Now let us pray that the Sun of Righteousness may dawn in these peoples’ hearts. Lord, stream your mercy that the world may know…2Pet.1:19. Amen.
