Beware of the Snare

Posted on October 19, 2011 Posted by Blue Letter Bible

There are two things the child of God ever needs to remember, and these are, that he has a wise Keeper, and that he has a wily enemy, and this wily enemy is always on the look-out to entangle us in the meshes of his snares.

1. The snare of pride. “The snare of the devil” (1 Timothy 3:7 KJV). The snare in which Satan entangled himself to his own downfall was pride (Ezekiel 28:1-9 KJV). Beware of this gin. It has many colours and shapes.

2. The snare of riches. “They that will be rich fall into temptation, and a snare” (1 Timothy 6:9 KJV). Glittering gold is a snare that has fascinated many to their overthrow and destruction (Acts5:1-9 KJV).

3. The snare of sleepiness. “Awake (margin) themselves out of the snare of the devil” (2 Timothy 2:26 KJV). Strife will stir up the old man, but it will put the better man to sleep.

4. The snare of idolatry. “Gideon made an ephod . . . . . which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house” (Judges 8:27 KJV). Idolatry is committed when anything or anyone is put in the place of God.

5. The snare of faltering. “Thine eye shall have no pity upon them, neither shalt thou serve their gods, for that will be a snare unto thee” (Deuteronomy 7:16 KJV).

6. The snare of fear. “The fear of man bringeth a snare” (Proverbs 29:25 KJV). If we fear God, we need fear no one else, be he man or devil.

7. The snare of evil companionship. “They shall be snares and traps unto you” (Joshua 23:13 KJV). The breath of the world will tarnish and infect us in our spiritual life.

Take heed and beware of the devil’s snare! But remember that your only true hope and strength is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.

I received edification from this. I need to be reminded about the snare of the fear of man, and not be shy to speak the Name of the Lord Jesus.

Thank you for a good summary of snares. I am sorry; I do not get #3 please see comments in CAPS.
    3. The snare of sleepiness. ”Awake (margin WHAT DOES MARGIN MEAN HERE) themselves out of the snare of the devil” (2 Timothy 2:26 KJV, NO REFERENCE TO SLEEPINESS). Strife will stir up the old man, but it will put the better man to sleep (WHAT DOES THIS MEAN–A BETTER MAN IS PUT TO SLEEP BY STRIFE–YET, WE ARE TO AVOID THE SNARE OF SLEEPINESS–I”M SORRY I DON’T GET THIS ONE.

The better man is the spiritual man. Grossly said, strife will cause you to be more carnal than spiritual, because the spiritual will be sleepy.

Was just going to post the same question. How does the snare of sleepiness work?? It does not make sense. Found it good though to point out snares we can get intangled with. But are these really all?? Thanks! Please reply soon. 🙂

Old man is our old nature (before we were born a second time), the carnal man. The better man is the spiritual man, what (or who) we became after receiving Christ in our heart. Strife will awaken our old self but put our better self to sleep.
      My 2 cents.

The snare of 2 Tim 2:26 is found in verse 25. It is the failure to acknowledge the truth.

Thank you for reminding that there is an unseen enemy that works constantly to ensnare us Christians and that our hope to avoid those traps is our Lord and Savior Jesus.

It is a bit cryptic, isnt it? It may help to try a different vexsion, and read back several versus to gain the context. The writer is speaking of unbelievers who are resting (sleepy) in their ignorance of the truth. Believers do this also by not reading the word and not praying on a consistent and frequent basis, thinking we already know enough from out past studies and prayers (the snare). But, like any relationship we cannot stop working to become closer to God, or we grow apart. We must be diligent rather than sleepy. This puts me in thought of the story of Nehemiah, where they rebuilt the temple with one hand, holding swords with the other to fend of their enemies. What we could accomplish if we had such diligence day to day!

Thanks to the poster who brought up #3.

I read and paused on it also. Thanks for the clarification.

God’s timing always seems perfect when I read this blog.

We are doing a series on Salvation in our Wednesday night Bible Study.

The topic last night was The Ten Commandments. It brought to mind for me yea and nay. The walk of yes and no. Yes to God and rejection of the enemy snares.

Mat 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

      2Cr 1:17
      2Cr 1:18
      2Cr 1:19

I have been sleepwalking in my faith for sometime and this is a loving jolt.
