Gordon-Conwell Seminary, a multi-denominational evangelical seminary on the East coast, releases a quarterly ministry magazine called Contact Magazine. Their Spring 2011 issue features several articles relating to the topic of theology.
Here is the issue’s description from their website:
Theology tends to get a bad rap in evangelical circles. But this issue of Contact Magazine explores why theology matters with thoughtful articles by Professor Peter Anders, Dr. Gwenfair Adams, Dr. Sean McDonough, and Dr. Jack Davis. Other articles include a discussion on the pressing issue of domestic violence in the church and how the Gospel plays a part in public discourse.
I’ve read through most of the articles, and they’re extremely helpful. For this week’s installment of Theology Thursdays, I wanted to make sure you had the opportunity to read them before Contact switches over to the Summer issue. You can also download the full magazine for free.
Here are the articles:
Thank you so much for placing these articles on Theology from the Contact Magazine. In memory of my nephew, Richard Zelaya, who went to be with the Lord in Dec, 2010, I am wanting to study and understand what was so important to him in this life – the importance of theology and doctrine.
The answers to ” What is Theology ” in this article is thorough and detailed. Firstly it describes it as not just being cognitive ( just thinking ) and yet at the end it mentions the cognitive as though it is the primary force.
I have to correct this assumption. The primary and most powerful force in learning is the ” Effective Domain” as separate from the ” Cognitive Domain “. The cognitive is learning through thinking alone. The Effective is learning by applying personal experience, our feelings, our emotions not just our thoughts.
Scripture teaches us that we must apply our minds and our hearts to God. We cannot understand the truth in God’s word
by thinking alone.
Science and Mathematics are two examples where only the cognitive is required.
In matters of the Spirit we cannot hope to understand God’s truth without bringing ourselves to the table of learning, our emotions, our desires, our faults, and all of our life experience. We must examine everything that we believe and everything that we trust in this world.
This is the effective domain.
My wife’s car is blue, everyone who has seen it will agree. This is the truth as to the color of my wife’s car. This is an objective truth.
To find Spiritual truth we must look for it subjectively. Meaning that we have to bring ourselves to it. As described abve.
